Air test inspection of floor impermeability

SFA-Testsystemen has developed a unique air test method for checking your impermeable containment system or forecourt surface. The SFA Air Test method can be used to determine the exact condition of your impermeable containment system or forecourt surface in a simple, accurate and objective manner.

SFA-Testsystemen is the only inspection agency that looks further than the surface of your impermeable containment system or forecourt surface alone. We assess an impermeable containment system or forecourt surface without disturbing the environment using our internally developed SFA Air Test System. The SFA Air Test System provides a reliable and objective insight into the condition of the impermeable containment system or forecourt surface.

SFA-Testsystemen has been separately accredited by the Dutch Accreditation Council to conduct on-site air test inspections for impermeable containment systems or forecourt surfaces.

Air test system protocol

Test points are created in the impermeable containment system or forecourt surface according to a previously made design. This is possible in both existing and new impermeable facilities. A mobile air test installation is used on the test points to create a controlled minimum excess pressure under the containment system or forecourt surface. A biologically degradable water and foam solution is applied to the top of the containment system or forecourt surface.

Imperfections found in parts of the containment system or forecourt surface that run through the entire floor structure are easily traced as they create air bubbles. It is only then that these imperfections are identified as defects. It is vital that places where surface imperfections are found in the impermeable containment system or forecourt surface, for which no air leakage is established, are not identified as defects.

The SFA Air Test assesses the entire impermeable containment system or forecourt surface, which is generally around 20 centimetres thick. The chance of them meeting the criteria for impermeability is obviously many times greater than that for the visible surface. The SFA Air Test is an objective inspection whereby the result does not depend on the interpretation of the inspector, but is determined by the system. Only actual defects are identified as defects. No test failure for your impermeable containment system or forecourt surface in doubtful cases or uncertainty and no unnecessary repairs to your impermeable containment system or forecourt surface.

Our inspectors flag, register and report these defects. You can use this report to have your facility repaired very specifically.

After completion of the SFA Air Test inspection, the test points are professionally sealed using a specially designed SFA Sealant. The sealants are supplied in various types and material choice is based on the composition of the liquids that the impermeable containment system or forecourt surface is expected to handle. The sealants can be applied at an appropriate depth so that they do not form any obstacles for internal company transport, such as fork-lift trucks.

The SFA Air Test system can be used both indoors and outdoors on all kinds of forecourt surfaces and containment systems, such as in situ concrete, impermeable asphalt and impermeable forecourt surfaces or containment systems with a plastic or ceramic overlay.

Air test: the alternative method

Your impermeable containment system or forecourt surface is assessed using the SFA Air Test inspection. This method can be used instead of the visual inspection. The owner/user of an impermeable containment system or forecourt surface can make savings on inspection costs by directly using the SFA Air Test method to inspect his/her impermeable containment system or forecourt surface. The visual aspect is limited to establishing the objective measurement results. As a result of the executed SFA Air Test inspection, a Statement of Impermeable Facility can also be issued upon visual inspection.
